Capital Readiness Cohort

Twenty entrepreneurs took a significant next step in their business journeys by enrolling in Northern Initiatives’ Capital Readiness Program, an intensive cohort designed to help business owners prepare to successfully secure funding. The group represented a wide range of industries, from real estate and nutrition services to specialty retail and candy shops, reflecting both the diversity and creativity of Michigan’s small business community. By the end of the program, a dozen participants completed the full curriculum and graduated, equipped with stronger financial knowledge and clearer paths forward.

Throughout the cohort, participants took a deep dive into the many forms of capital available to growing businesses. Sessions explored everything from angel investors and private equity to microloans and other flexible financing options, helping entrepreneurs understand not just where money comes from, but which types of funding best align with their goals and stage of growth. The entrepreneurs entered the program with a solid foundation, having already completed Northern Initiatives’ Business Plan Cohort, and the Capital Readiness Program built on that groundwork with more advanced, practical tools.

Graduation from the cohort doesn’t mark the end of support. Participants will continue to receive one-on-one guidance and coaching from Northern Initiatives as they pursue new milestones, whether that means securing capital, expanding operations, or refining long-term strategies.

One of those graduates is Destiney Lesley, owner of Load a Spud in downtown Battle Creek. Through the Capital Readiness Program, Lesley strengthened her understanding of funding options and positioned her business for its next phase of growth, demonstrating the program’s impact on real entrepreneurs and real communities.
